Mary Kay Letourneau 58, the Seattle teacher who was convicted in 1997 of raping her 12-year-old student,Vili Fualaau, who she later married, has died of cancer according to her former attorney,David Gehrke.

Most of her family was by her side during her last days including Vili, who was giving her 24-hour care the last month of her life.

Mary Kay Letourneau, was a married 34-year-old sixth grade teacher at Shorewood Elementary School and mother of four in Seattle who shot to fame after he affair with her 12-year-old student.

Her crimes were discovered after she and Fualaau were caught together by police in the back seat of a minivan parked at the Des Moines Marina on Puget Sound in June 1996. Letourneau was seen jumping into its front seat while Fualaau pretended to sleep in the back.
She further aroused officers suspicions that something sexual had been happening between them after making claims that Fualaau was 18. After being taken to a nearby police station, Letourneau insisted that she had been baby sitting Fualaau.
Two months later, Letourneau fell pregnant with Fualaau’s child and later got arrested in March 1997 after one of her husband’s friends tipped the police off about what was going on.
In August 1997, in an agreement with prosecutors, Letourneau pleaded guilty to child rape in exchange for a 3-month jail sentence and probation. Judge Linda Lau accepted the deal on condition that Letourneau have no contact with Fualaau. By this time, she had given birth to their daughter.
Two weeks after completing her sentence, Letourneau was caught with Fulalaau in a car. She admitted to having sex with him again, and this earned her seven and a half years in prison.Their second child was born in October 1998,while she was behind bars.
In August  2004, Letourneau was freed from jail.  Fualaau, by then 21, persuaded a court to dump the order that barred her from contacting him, and they married at a Washington state winery in May 2005.
Fualaau first filed for separation from Letourneau in 2017, but later withdrew the request. He filed again last year, with the separation formalized after Fualaau said he’d come to realize that he’d been exploited by Letourneau.
