At least 41 people have been killed and 84 injured after two avalanches hit the mountainside near Turkey’s eastern border with Iran. The avalanches took place on Tuesday and Wednesday.
On Wednesday some 300 emergency service workers were called to a highway near the mountain-surrounded town of Bahcesaray in Van province, after the first avalanche struck late Tuesday pummeling a minibus and snow clearing vehicle. That snow slide killed five people, injured eight people and left two missing. The second avalanche slammed into a mountain road around noon, wiping out a huge team of rescue workers sent to find those missing from the earlier incident.
