A person in Washington State has been confirmed to be suffering from Wuhan coronavirus. This is the first confirmed case in the United States of the mysterious respiratory infection that first broke out in china, where the patient is said to have traveled.
Investigators tested samples from the patient for the presence of the virus and positive results were received over the weekend.
On Tuesday, Chinese authorities confirmed that six people have died of the infection in Wuhan. Nearly 300 cases have been reported to date in China. Many of the patients lived in or traveled to Wuhan. The WHO will meet tomorrow to decide whether to declare the outbreak an international public health emergency.
Hospitals around the country are likely to make a few changes to their electronics prompts so that they can tell whether patients coming into the hospital with respiratory symptoms have been to china or have been in contact with anyone who has been to China. This kind of system is already in use at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
