Former NASCAR driver Eric McClure has died. His family said he passed away on Sunday but did not list a cause of death, adding family members “would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support during this very difficult time.”

McClure drove competitively from 2003-16, making three starts in the Cup Series and 288 in the Xfinity Series. His best finish was eighth place in the 2013 Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona.

He was involved in a crash at Talladega in 2012 when his car hit the wall at a high rate of speed. He sustained a concussion and other injuries that left him with lingering side effects. “The accident at Talladega changed me,” he told the publication Frontstretch in 2015. “Certainly the illnesses that I had in subsequent years were a result of some of the treatments during that process. Physically, I’m not the same. I’m not the same person I was at certain aspects, not just arthritis but just some things are different.”

He also described the challenges his family faced after the accident. He has seven daughters. “We went through a really dark time, I’m not going to lie,” he said. “It was the most challenging time of our lives. From family life, to what happened at the track, and there were a lot of dark days through that process.”

Eric McClure Personal life

McClure was born in Chilhowie, Virginia, and was a graduate of Emory and Henry College. He was married to Miranda from 2004 until their divorce in 2018 and had seven daughters, Maybreigh Elizabeth (b. Mar. 5, 2007), Maryleigh Isabella (b. Aug. 27, 2008), Mirabella Rileigh (b. July 11, 2010), Merritt Hetteigh Mae (b. Mar. 12, 2012), Myanna Brookleigh (b. July 31, 2013), Meraline Everleigh (b. May 8, 2015), and Melania (b. March 1, 2017).

McClure’s home in Abingdon, Virginia suffered major damage in an April 27, 2011 tornado. However, McClure and his family sat out the storm in their basement and were uninjured. McClure died on May 2, 2021, aged 42. He was engaged to Keira Brinegar Tibbs at the time of his death.

McClure experienced serious health problems in recent years, as he detailed to the Bristol Herald Courier in 2019. McClure told the newspaper after a series of serious health scares, he had been diagnosed with a severe musculoskeletal disorder. These disorders “are injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“A doctor told me that I had rhabdomyolysis. That put me on compartment syndrome and full kidney failure,” McClure said in 2019.
After undergoing dialysis and multiple surgeries to save his limbs, McClure began to show signs of improvement, according to the Herald Courier, though he said he still experienced some numbness in his extremities.
“I am sorry to learn of the death of NASCAR driver Eric McClure,”. “He and his family have long been Southwest Virginians. My condolences to his loved ones.”
McClure was the father to seven children, all of the girls. His marriage to Miranda McClure ended with their estrangement, according to NASCAR.com, and in October 2020 McClure pleaded no contest to misdemeanor domestic violence charges stemming from a 2018 incident with his wife.
